This “fundamentals” session provides a meaningful overview to nonprofit and congregational fundraising. It includes principles of effective organizations and fundraising programs; how to cultivate and steward donors; how to structure annual giving programs, special appeals, and capital campaigns; and discussion on planned giving and how to identify and motivate donors for such gifts. Learning outcomes will include:

- Understanding effective organizational and fundraising principles
- A command of gift cultivation and donor stewardship
- Tools and tactics for multichannel annual giving and special gift appeals
- Fundamentals of a planned giving program

Clyde WalterClyde Walter has over 15 years of executive leadership and board service experience for organizations and ministries across the United States in such areas as higher education; mental health and social services; congregational and parochial school ministry; child development; and the arts.

Clyde has built up his expertise by working in most every nonprofit external relations capacity: managing marketing and outreach for a college division; serving as a “solo shop” Development Director; leading a comprehensive campaign and overseeing the fundraising and marketing areas for the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago; to driving growth strategy and building an integrated fundraising, marketing, and outreach program as Chief Growth Officer of a rapidly growing mental health agency.

Across his work in Lutheran education and human service organizations, Clyde has grown fundraising and engagement by 30+ percent in each organization through intentional strategies with donors, alumni, and congregation constituencies.

Paul MarshPaul Marsh, CFRE, helps nonprofit organizations and churches engage generous and enthusiastic donors with shared goals to change the world.

For three decades, Paul has championed generosity through philanthropy and volunteerism. His own experiences of leadership and fundraising in higher education, social advocacy, and international relief, and service as a volunteer firefighter, provide a breadth of knowledge and expertise across the fundraising profession.

A consultant with GSB since 2009 and a Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) since 2000, Paul works with clients and teaches workshops across the United States in fundraising for capital campaigns, annual funds, and major gift appeals; board and executive leadership; and strategic planning.
